Power Distribution Unit
(PDU or EPDU)
A power distribution unit (PDU) is installed horizontally or vertically in IT cabinets, often in 19-inch racks with redundant A/B feeds. It distributes power to equipment such as servers and switches and can provide different types of outlets, including IEC C19 and IEC C13.

Smooth Datacenter Operation
In contrast to conventional socket strips, the PDU also has functions such as overvoltage protection, temperature monitoring or data acquisition for calculating the PUE value (Power Usage Effectiveness). For example, the PDU can raise an alarm and send an e-mail in an emergency. PDUs are often also a central building block for a comprehensive energy management system (EMS) and remote maintenance concept. With these diverse functions, power distribution units make a significant contribution to the efficiency and security of data centers. In short: The power distribution unit is an indispensable component for smooth operation in the data center!
A PDU serves as an important bridge between the management of a building, the primary energy supply and the connection of different server racks in a data center. Rack PDUs connect directly to server racks and provide power to them. As a rule, two PDUs are used for this purpose, which redundantly supply the individual IT components with energy. They can help to better regulate and monitor load balancing. Rack PDUs with particularly sophisticated functions are also called Smart PDUs or Intelligent PDUs. These include, for example, three-phase displays for powering multiple devices and remote management tools that use the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) to help administrators monitor the network. Such devices have the ability to adjust and monitor performance demands from remote locations.
IT rack PDUs form the interface between the power supply and IT equipment. This important component is often overlooked. PDUs are more than simple power strips. Monitoring and analysis functions tailored to your needs support sustainable IT operations, allowing load peaks and residual currents to be analysed and evaluated precisely.
ePDU technology: rack power distribution and visibility
Basic, metered or switched
Rack PDUs distribute power to IT equipment. Depending on the design, they add input metering, outlet metering or remotely switched outlets. Required functions depend on the operating concept and responsibilities.
Connections and load distribution
Inputs, plugs, outlets and circuit protection must match connected equipment. Three-phase supplies require attention to phase loading. Inrush currents and expansion allowances are included in sizing.
A/B paths and alarms
For dual-power-supply devices, assignment to separate supply paths is documented. Load thresholds and optional environmental sensors help identify constraints early. Measurements require clear rack and supply identification.
Secure management integration
Remote switching needs restrictive permissions and traceable approvals. Management networks, time synchronisation, firmware maintenance and monitoring interfaces are coordinated. Accidental shutdown of critical loads must be prevented through technical and organisational controls.
